Outside Scholarships/Resources

Many agencies, employers, military and service organizations award funds to students. Receipt of these external awards may result in a reduction of financial aid from Mercer. Therefore, if you are a financial aid recipient, you must notify the Office of Student Financial Planning, in writing, of any resources you anticipate receiving from sources other than Mercer. To the extent possible, we will adjust loan awards before reducing grant funds. Students whose tuition is covered by an outside source are not eligible for merit tuition awards from the University. Examples of outside sources include Veterans' Benefits, Vocational Rehab, Athletics, Tuition Waiver, Employer Reimbursements, etc..

It is also your responsibility to notify the Office of Student Financial Planning of any special instructions or billing information regarding external funds. All checks for these awards must be sent to the Office of Student Financial Planning. No credit will be entered on your account before the check arrives. It is Mercer's policy to equally divide external scholarships between fall tuition and spring tuition each semester unless otherwise specified by the donor.

Army ROTC Scholarship

Mercer University
Policy Statement

Financial Aid for Army ROTC Scholarship Recipients

Mercer University awards a Mercer University Room/Board Scholarship to each student who receives a three or four year Army ROTC Tuition Scholarship.  The Room/Board Scholarship is not awarded to non-scholarship ROTC students or to students who are not fully accepted into the ROTC program (i.e. have not passed the PT test)

The Mercer University Room/Board Scholarship covers the cost of the student’s direct charges for room and board at Mercer University.  Dorm charges covered go to the highest double occupancy rate (higher dorm rates for private bedroom are not covered).  If the student lives in University owned apartments or the Greek Village, the scholarship will go to the Adam/Winship 2 bedroom apartment rate.  If a student moves out of the Universitys Residence Hall or University owned apartments, that student automatically forfeits the room portion of the scholarship.  If a student does not participate in a meal plan, that student automatically forfeits the board portion of the scholarship.  Students must notify to Financial Aid Office if they plan to move off-campus and/or do not plan to purchase a meal plan.

The room portion of the Mercer Room/Board Scholarship covers up to standard double room rates.  Private room charges are not covered by the Scholarship.  The board portion of the scholarship covers only the amount of the meal plan in which the student participates.  Cash cards are not covered.

Both three and four year Army ROTC Scholarship recipients are eligible to receive the Room/Board Scholarship for four academic years (eight semesters) at Mercer University.  If a student attends Mercer for more than eight semesters, the Room/Board Scholarship will only be provided if the classes taken during the additional quarters are required for the student to graduate.  Authorization from the Financial Aid Office must be obtained prior to the beginning of these additional terms.

With the exception of the Room/Board Scholarship, financial aid for three-year Army ROTC Scholarship recipients is initially awarded (i.e., freshman year) identical to all other freshman students.  Any academic scholarship received freshman year is based upon the students high school GPA and SAT/ACT score.  Beginning with a ROTC three year designees sophomore year, the Army ROTC Tuition Scholarship becomes effective.   The recipients Merit Award is cancelled and the Army ROTC Tuition Scholarship and HOPE pay tuition.   Any aid from other sources such as Pell Grant and Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant will go towards room and board and Mercer will make up the difference up to the amounts indicated above.  In no circumstance may the total Mercer aid room and board charges for the student.  The student is responsible for paying the difference in their actual rent charges and the amount of their Mercer Room scholarship.

Students are only given Board Scholarships if they contract with the University for a Meal Plan.  The amount of any Board Scholarship will not exceed the students actual Meal Plan charges.
